Born in October 1967 in London, England, Nigel Freeman grew up in San Antonio, Texas. In San Antonio, he was introduced to the richness of Mexico – its dramatic history, vibrant colors, vivid light, and cultural affinity for the visual arts. His family made frequent trips to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico during his Mr. Freeman's youth. His experiences growing up in Texas and his family travel to Mexico laid the groundwork for Mr. Freeman's professional career in the visual arts. In 1991, after receiving an M.F.A. in painting from Columbia University in New York City, Mr. Freeman returned to San Miguel de Allende primarily focused on en plein air landscape painting. Mr. Freeman went on to study traditional painting techniques and printmaking at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts in Paris as an Artist In Residence at the Fondation des États-Unis from 1994-1996. Mr. Freeman's travels inform his fascination with colorful interpretations of the exotic. Over the years, he has interpreted various genres of history, still life, and en plein air landscape painting. His painting aesthetic, style, and composition combine the skill and visual interpretation of traditional representational Realism with a deft hand towards deliberate whimsy and abstraction, forgoing idealization and romanticism to create a less restricted yet ultimately fetching unified image. He has shown his paintings internationally and has had solo exhibitions in London, Paris, New York City, and San Antonio, Texas. Mr. Freeman has worked in New York City since 1998 where he is an internationally known expert and director of African-American fine art at Swann Auction Galleries. He and his family live in Maplewood, New Jersey. Galeria 19 Fine Art in Fredericksburg, Texas is Mr. Freeman's exclusive representative in Texas. . |
