Evelyne Boren was born in Munich, Germany in 1939.  She emigrated to the United States in 1958. Throughout the 1960's, she enjoyed a career as a Hollywood underwater stunt diver, appearing in numerous movies and television shows, including several early James Bond movies and the television shows Seahunt and Flipper.  Inspired by the beauty and bright colors of the Caribbean, Evelyne took up painting in water color while filming on location in Nassau.  As there were no art classes and no artists to study with locally, she studied from books at the local library.  She was especially impressed by American painters John Singer Sargent and Winslow Homer.  After winning first prize at a local Nassau art exhibit, she continued to paint and began selling her work at various exhibits in the Bahamas.  Her career as professional artist came into its own in 1972.

After almost 40 years of painting in watercolors and oils, Ms. Boren continues to capture scene, color, and mood in her compositions.  Her palette knife oil paintings are exciting and textural as her watercolors are calming and soft.

Her favorite way to paint is go out on location to create a watercolor study of a scene at a particular time of day.  Back in the studio, she makes a few charcoal sketches of the same subject improving and simplifying the design.  As she prefers to work with a limited tonal palette, she chooses her color combination and makes a few small color sketches to confirm that her choice of color can express her feelings about the subject.  Then with very little drawing, she lays in pure color on watercolor paper or canvas and clean colorwashes saving some white areas.

After working in oils in the conventional method [from dark to light], Ms. Boren began a new, more direct approach using palette knives for most of her oil paintings.  As in painting with watercolors, she works through sketches and color studies so that when she starts putting pigment on canvas she is already well aware of the direction of the painting.   With a limited tonal palette, she works wet into wet moving the paint with the palette knives – working from thin layers of paint to thicker, textured layers.

Ms. Boren 's work is a highly evolved, sophisticated form of post-impressionism. Her vibrant and fearless use of color and texture paired with her mastery as a painter translates her own personal vision and experience in to one of our own.
